Special WASH Award for the empowering people. Award

23 July, 2018 [Global Care]

The empowering people. Award offers prizes for low-tech solutions to social problems in developing countries. The €20,000 Special WASH Award sponsored by Knorr-Bremse Global Care aims to promote innovations in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene.

  • 2nd prize in the empowering people. Award 2016: Garbage Clinical Insurance enables people to pay for their health insurance with recyclable garbage.

  • 3rd prize in the empowering people. Award 2016: the Barsha Pump is a water wheel that uses river flow energy to pump water onto fields.

Why should we support social entrepreneurs? Despite the fact that education levels are rising steadily in many developing countries, limited job opportunities mean that unemployment is increasing, especially among young people.

By providing support to social entrepreneurs, we can kill two birds with one stone by creating jobs and addressing social and environmental problems at a local level.

This prompted the foundation Siemens Stiftung to establish the empowering people. Award, which enters its third round this year. “There are lots of relatively simple but smart technological solutions that can make a real difference in developing regions. These innovations address serious deficiencies by enabling good-quality services in even the remotest areas.

The competition helps us discover promising technologies like this”, says Rolf Huber, member of the Siemens Stiftung Board of Directors, looking back over the last few years. The award seeks out innovative business models in a variety of areas including education, energy, waste management and WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene).

Knorr-Bremse Global Care has been involved in WASH projects, particularly in Asia and Africa, since 2013. After all, water is an issue that cuts across multiple development goals: better drinking water, sanitation and hygiene reduce infant mortality, improve maternal health and promote gender equality.

According to Julia Thiele-Schürhoff, Chair of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse Global Care, “One of our goals at Global Care is to strengthen the independence and self-reliance of the people we help. By supporting social entrepreneurs, we can help to make innovative ideas more effective and sustainable. In addition to the prize money for the winners, the empowering people. Award also offers people the opportunity to link up with a wonderful network of mentors and supporters”.

The Special WASH Award is being offered for the first time as part of the cooperation between Global Care and Siemens Stiftung. Together, we can do more.

The deadline for applications from social entrepreneurs is October 31, 2018. An international panel of judges will then select the enterprises with the most promising and sustainable solutions for improving the water supply and sanitation in developing countries.
